The vast bulk of it rising
like bread puffed with yeast,
massive as forever.
I’ve claimed this small slice
of it and gone about devouring
every morsel, transforming them to memory.
I don’t allow myself to think
how insubstantial are those filaments
of leven that float upon the gray
furrows of the mind,
how fragile those crumbs that hold me
to the loaf.
